'An Active Rest' is influence by the concept behind the word rest. In reality the only thing that rests during that time is the sound. Very often the mind is trying to find that next note or, in the future, moving to get reach it in time. It is rarely a rest where nothing happens.
Skills Analysis
This piece requires an understanding of the notes F3, G3, F5, G5, the notes of a crotchet, minim and semibreve and the crotchet and minim rest.
Practice Strategy
Initially it is beneficial to tap the rhythm on your knees. Using the appropriate hand for each line being sure to acknowledge the rest with a silence. Using the metronome with the rhythm can help here. Look at the notes and determine the letter names. At the piano attempt each section by itself then put the hands together a line at a time, not forgetting to practice the join with the last bar of line one and the initial bar of line two.
