Three Left Hand Notes

Chris Caton-Greasley LLCM(TD)

10 Oct 2021

This piece introduces the notes C3, D3, and E3, the time signature of 4/4 and the note values of a crotchet and minim.

Overview

Skills Analysis

The learning objective chosen sets the reasons for learning this piece. The initial skills include reading the left hand notes C3, D3, E3, which are usually shown in the bass clef.

The secondary reason is to play on the beat without pauses. Before you play the piece by pressing the keys play a piece silently tapping the correct key saying the letter names as you play.

This piece introduces the Time Signature. This is two numbers directly after the clef. The top number and bottom number, even thought they are the same, have different meanings. The top number should be counted and the lower number tells you a crotchet has one count.

Play in a detached manner (detaché) do not try to connect them, this is not required.

Do not write the letter names on the keys, instead look at the location to the group of two black keys. These repeat up and down the piano as do the white notes connected to them.

Practice Strategy

When practising 'Three Left Hand Notes' take time to read the left hand notes saying the letter names out loud. It may be beneficial to say the numbers of the fingers you will be using.
Clap the rhythm and look at each note, awareness of which have two counts and which have one count will help you as you play. Some students have found it beneficial to say the letter names as they play.
Start slowly, play it once counting the length of each note. The second time try it a little faster the speed up until you are comfortable.
